FAQ

It is called Hollywood.

D.W. Griffith created the first movie industry in California in 1887. It was named for its Los Angeles location, also known as Hollywood at that time.

The name stuck because it was such an exciting place for people to visit. It was a place that people would travel from all walks of the globe to experience.

Today, Hollywood is still very much part of our culture. We have movies, television shows, music videos, commercials, etc. They are all called Hollywood.

What is the difference between an Indie Film and a Foreign Language Film?

An independent film is usually made by a single filmmaker who makes his or her own decisions about everything.

The opposite is true for foreign language films. They are usually produced by a larger production company.

They often hire writers and actors from other nations.

You can also find professional translators to make the dialogue sound natural.

How much does Hollywood make a year?

The average movie costs around $100 million to produce. You could make ten movies a month for a decade and still have enough money left to buy a small nation.

You would own your own island, with an airport, a power plant, a bank, a post office, a police force, a fire department, a school system, a hospital, a zoo, a sports stadium, a theater, and a cinema.

If this doesn't sound fun, you are insane.

Why are there so few independent films that get released?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.

However, this is rarely the case. Independent filmmakers are often used by distributors.

They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.

They delay the release of a low-budget movie until after the summer blockbuster seasons has started.

Distributors are also trying to keep films off the streets until audiences have already spent hundreds upon thousands of dollars on tickets or popcorn.

They don't want any of those profits to go to waste.

What made Hollywood famous?

It was easy. They took risks and did something different to make it popular. They made films that people would recall for years.

They were also bold enough to try new ideas.

Which actor is Hollywood's most well-known?

Tom Hanks holds record for the highest-paid actor. He earns at least $25 million per movie. According to Celebrity Net Worth.

Will Smith is second, having earned $65,000,000 over four years for his contribution to Independence Day.

Tom Cruise is third, having earned $60 million over five-years for his role as Ethan Hunt on Mission Impossible.

Fourth place goes out to Daniel Craig, who earned $50million over four years playing James Bond in Skyfall.

Fifth place goes to Leonardo DiCaprio, who earned $45 million over five years for starring in Titanic.

Sixth place goes out to Brad Pitt. He earned $40 million in six years as a result of his portrayal of Steve McQueen's character in 12 Years a Slave.

Seventh place goes to Robert Downey Jr., who earned $35 million over seven years for playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in Iron Man.

Johnny Depp is ranked eighth. Over eight years, he earned $30,000,000 for his role of Captain Jack Sparrow as part of Pirates of The Caribbean.

Ninth place goes the George Clooney, who earned $25 Million over nine years to play Matt Damon's role in Good Night and Good Luck.

Angelina Jolie comes in 10th. Her roles in Mr. & Mrs Smith, Tomb Raider, and Mr. & Mrs Smith earned her $20 million over 11 year.

What happens to my film if it doesn't do well in the box office?

If your film does not do well at the box office, there are many things that could happen.

First, it is possible to decide to modify how you market the film.

Second, you may decide to rewrite the script.

Third, you might consider adding characters.

Fourth, it is possible to decide to eliminate certain characters.

Fifth, you may decide to trim scenes.

Sixth, and you might decide that it wasn't worthwhile making the film.

How To

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.

You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove the name of your from the list.

How old must one be to get a HWOF star

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Your family members can nominate you for a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened the star thefts? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
