FAQ

Why aren't more independent films distributed?

Many indie filmmakers believe that distributors will take their films.

Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.

However, this is rarely the case. Distributors often profit from independent filmmakers.

They might delay a film’s release date until after the awards show has finished.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don't want any of those profits to go to waste.

Which percentage of the box offices goes to marketing budgets and what is their share?

Marketing budgets account for approximately 20% to 40% of film budgets. This is because marketing is critical to the success and longevity of any film.

Without good marketing, no one knows about your film. It is impossible to get people to pay for your film without knowing all about it.

Why don't more filmmakers use crowdfunding websites like Indiegogo or Kickstarter?

Crowdfunding platforms are fantastic because they allow you direct contact with potential investors.

Most filmmakers don’t believe they have the right to ask for money. They feel they need someone else who can vouch for them.

Because they are still in their infancy, they do not believe that anyone should invest.

Instead, they spend months working hard on their project in the hope that someone will notice.

Then, when they launch the campaign, they realize how poorly prepared they were.

Instead of receiving thousands upon thousands of dollars, the recipients end up with a handful donations.

How much does it take to distribute a feature?

A distribution deal typically costs between $100,000 and $150,000.

The average cost of a theater is approximately $10,000

The average screen cost is about $5,000

This means that your distribution fee for 100 screens would be approximately $500,000.

Your distribution fees would be $50,000 if you had ten screens.

How many movies does Hollywood make a year?

Each year, Hollywood studios produce approximately 3,000 films. That's right, three thousand!

Hollywood spends billions to advertise for these movies. They spend millions creating them. They also spend millions on marketing them. But how many do you think actually end up getting released into theaters?

Most likely, the answer is around 200-300. The question is, what happens to all the other 2,700+ films? Well, most are either made as direct-to-video releases, or they just sit there gathering dust in storage vaults.

They are not all destined to be overlooked. Some have been chosen for distribution via Netflix or Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and iTunes, Google Play and other platforms.

We should see more of them. They're not available in theaters. They're too costly to produce.

And if they were cheaper to produce, they'd be released into theaters.

That's where I come in. I can help guide you in the best way possible to put your movie in theaters.

I will teach you how to increase your return on investment (ROI), as well as increasing your chances of seeing the movie in theaters.

We have to face it...

It can be very difficult to get your film in theaters. The process can be complex and lengthy.

It can also come at a high cost before you even begin.

Even worse, your window of opportunity to distribute your film is very limited.

There's not enough time between the moment a film is completed and its theatrical debut.

How To

How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. For example, if you were first nominated in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

Contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to get your name removed from the HWOF and to repay any outstanding debts. They will remove you from the list.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

You must be at the least 18 year old to be nominated. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Nominating you can be done by family members. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.

What happened the star thefts? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
