How To

How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. A second letter confirms acceptance if the nominee accepts the nomination. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. For example, if you were first nominated in 1990, you would owe $15,000. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove the name of your from the list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

You must be at the least 18 year old to be nominated. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Your family members can nominate you for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.

Why not use a new street, instead of staring at everyone?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened to the stolen stars? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
